How to make a successful application addremove
If you have found a job you'd like to apply for, the next step is to ensure you submit a great application. Preparation is key! Before you start your application, make sure you have the following information to hand:
Your home address
Contact details
National Insurance number (if you have one)
Employment history
Qualifications you’ve studied
Your professional registration/PIN (if applicable)
The name and contact details of someone who could provide a reference
How well do you match the role?addremove
When we shortlist applications, we assess how closely you meet the key requirements of the role. Make sure you carefully read the job description and person specification. If you don’t meet the essential criteria, it’s unlikely that you’ll be shortlisted.
In your application we recommend you highlight how you live by the Trust's values, you can read more about this on the our values page within this site.
Some of examples of this are provided below:
An example of how I show care is when I noticed a colleague struggling with a deadline. I offered to help by taking on some tasks and listened to their concerns. I was approachable and non-judgmental, and I helped reduce their workload.
As a student, I always ensured that my assignments were completed on time and paid close attention to following instructions and guidelines. If I identified an area for improvement, I would speak up and seek feedback to learn and enhance my skills for the next assignment.
Provide detailed supporting informationaddremove
Our application forms include questions that allow you to highlight your skills, knowledge, experience, talents, strengths, and how your values align with those of the Trust.
It’s important to provide real examples of your skills or knowledge, don’t just say you are good at something. As an example, if a role requires strong organisational skills, you could explain that you manage your tasks using a to-do list and regularly communicate with your team about deadlines.
If you don’t meet one of the key requirements for the role, it’s okay to acknowledge this, but explain how you plan to address it (e.g., through training) and emphasise that you’re a quick learner.
If you lack formal employment experience, use examples from school or volunteering. Experience is important, but we also look for personality, attitude, commitment, teamwork, and your understanding of who we are and the services we provide.
Using artificial intelligence (AI)addremove
Using artificial intelligence (AI) tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can be a helpful way to support the process of completing your job application. These tools can assist by checking for spelling or grammar errors, improving sentence structure, or providing suggestions on what to include.
However, while AI can streamline certain aspects of the writing process, it should never replace your own responses or be used to write your application for you.
Responses created by AI often don’t fully match the job requirements and can feel general or impersonal. They might not show your unique voice, experiences, or perspective. AI could also give incorrect information about your qualifications, skills, or experience, which could harm your application.
We check applications carefully and you might also be asked about your experience in the interview, so it’s important to make sure your application is accurate and honest. While AI can help improve your application, your supporting statement should still be personal and written in your own words. This is your chance to show how your skills and experiences match the job and explain why you’re the right person for the role.
After you’ve appliedaddremove
Your application will be reviewed to ensure your skills, knowledge and experience match the job that you have applied for.

If you are not selected, we will notify you by email. We encourage you to apply for other positions with us in the future, as your skills and experience may be a better fit for upcoming roles.

Interview tips
Preparing for your interviewaddremove
Make sure you are ready for your interview by preparing in advance.
Review your application, the job description, and the person specification to understand what is required and how your skills, knowledge, and experience match the role.
Research Mid Yorks to learn more about us, including our values.
Consider what questions might be asked, and prepare some answers in advance.
The STAR method helps you answer interview questions by organising your response clearly. STAR stands for:
Situation: Explain the situation you were in
Task: Describe the challenge you faced
Action: Share what you did to solve it
Result: Highlight the outcome or what you achieved
Prepare your own questions too; they can help you decide whether the role and Mid Yorks are right for you. You could ask about staff benefits, what it's like to work here, how flexible the role is and opportunities to progress.
Example STAR Method
Q: Can you give an example of working in a team?
Situation: As a Ward Manager, I was part of a team managing patient care and we needed to reduce waiting times.
Task: I met with colleagues from various departments to discuss needs and barriers.
Action: I organised regular meetings to address roles and implement changes.
Result: We successfully launched a new admissions process, reducing waiting times and improving patient experience!
Getting to your interviewaddremove
Plan your journey and make sure you allow enough time to ensure you arrive on time.
Make a note of the interviewers contact details so you can let them know if you are going to be late.
Your interview confirmation will include where your interview is taking place and who you need to ask for when you arrive. So make sure to check which hospital site and building your interview is at, or if it's a virtual interview allow plenty of time to get setup.
During the interviewaddremove
It's perfectly normal to feel nervous during an interview. Just try to stay calm, and the interviewer will do their best to make you feel at ease.
Be clear when answering the questions, always try and give examples to show how your experiences relate to what is being asked.
Remember, the main goal in an interview is to show why you're the right person for the job. Be yourself and let your personality shine. Getting the job will depend on both your skills and your enthusiasm, as well as how you answer the questions.
